Analysis: UK renewables enjoy record year in 2025 – but gas power
UK''s fleet of wind, solar and biomass power plants set records in 2025, Carbon Brief analysis shows, but electricity from gas still went up.
The total offshore wind power capacity installed in the United Kingdom at the start of 2022 was 11.3 GW. The United Kingdom became the world leader of offshore wind power generation in October 2008 when it overtook Denmark.

The United Kingdom became the world leader of offshore wind power generation in October 2008 when it overtook Denmark. In 2013, the 175-turbine London Array wind farm, located off the Kent coast, became the largest offshore wind farm in the world; this was surpassed in 2018 by the Walney 3 Extension.
With 2025 the UK's sunniest year on record, conditions were ideal for British solar panels to capitalise on long, sunny days through the spring and summer. "Solar's probably a bigger part of the system than we'd expected, given the cost has come down so much," said Michael Grubb, professor of energy and climate change at University College London.
