Wind power generation in Brazil: An overview about investment
To provide further insights into the current scenario in Brazil, this study analyzed the investment and the scale of these projects, particularly using the Levelized Cost of Energy
The Brazilian wind energy generation projects have not been happening in a wide range of sizes, as could be seen in this sample, which covers almost all the projects that have succeeded at the auctions. Other sources of energy have a much wider range of sizes, giving more room for scale gains.
In Brazil, the debt of energy generation projects are usually funded by development banks (BNDES), private banks and debentures ( ANEEL, 2020a ). Wind generation is considered as a renewable source of energy with the capability of reducing external costs for society.
How much do commercial wind turbines cost? A utility-scale wind turbine costs between $1.3 million to $2.2 million per MW of installed nameplate capacity. Most commercial-scale turbines installed nowadays are 2 MW in capacity and cost between $3 and $4 million to install.
Large offshore turbines can cost tens of millions of dollars, with the most powerful 12 MW turbines reaching up to $400 million for manufacturing and installation. Lastly, Statista reports that the global average installed cost for onshore wind power was approximately $1,160 per kilowatt in 2023.
